He studied medicine at the Universities of Würzburg and Freiburg, earning his medical doctorate in 1881. Following graduation, he furthered his education at Tübingen with pathologist Ernst Ziegler and in Vienna with dermatologists Moriz Kaposi and Isidor Neumann.
